Chicago Style Citations: Academic Paper Writing Manual

If you’re writing an assignment, article or book, it is almost inevitable that you will be using some of the ideas of someone else. Citation then means giving credit to the person whose ideas it is. If you write, knowing how to cite and reference correctly is a valuable and necessary skill.

Create Citation to Avoid Copyright Infringement

It is the duty of any writer to give reference to copied content so as to avoid copyright infringement issues.

Providing references allows readers to analyze the information and cross check the details from the original document. Because information on the Internet is constantly being updated, you need to create citation styles that include the date you last accessed the page.

There are different types of referencing:

  1. APA – American Psychological Association
  2. MLA – developed by the Modern Language Association.
  3. Harvard – a style of referencing, used mainly by university students, to cite information sources.
  4. Chicago – This is a style guide for American English and is known as CMOS or CMS. It is one of the most respected- and also widely used style guides in the United States.

The Chicago Manual of Style is mostly used in history and humanities for instance, being unique in that there are two citation systems you can choose from – notes and bibliography and author-date, a system more common in the sciences where sources are cited in the text.

For formatting a Chicago style cover page, the title must be centered a third of the way down the page. A little further down should be your name and class details. For subtitles, end the title line with a colon, placing the subtitle on the line below the title.

Students working in humanities prefer the notes and bibliography system where sources are cited in numbered footnotes or endnotes.

With Chicago style citation, you will need to know how to create the bibliography or annotated bibliography – a list of all the sources used in the paper which includes publication details of the sources. It will need to follow this format:

  • The bibliography must be single spaced.
  • The 2nd line of the source must be indented.
  • The last names of the authors must be arranged alphabetically

Once a source is used, a Roman numeral must be placed at the end of the ‘copied’ information as superscript. It is lifted higher than the other text and is also smaller with the number correlating with the foot- or endnote. The writer can decide to put the citation at the bottom of the page where the superscript is placed or to put the citations together at the end of the work as Chicago style endnotes.

Acknowledging Your Sources

Chicago’s Notes and Bibliography formatting requires that writers use Chicago style footnotes and endnotes when using in-text citations as they acknowledge the different sources used in the work. To cite a book, you will need to look at the front pages of it to find the publication information you need to include in the citation.

Chicago bibliography items should be formatted this way:

Author’s Name, Title of Book (Place of Publication: Publisher, Publication Date), Page Numbers.

Example of references cited in text:

Text: “…Bouvard was struck by the serious air of Pécuchet. One would have thought that he wore a wig, so flat and black were the locks which adorned his high skull. 1…”

Footnote example (first footnote)

1. Gustave Flaubert, Bouvard et Pécuchet, (Chicago, Simon P. Magee Publisher, 1904), 2.

Subsequent note

2. Flaubert, Bouvard et Pécuchet, 33.

Bibliography example

Flaubert, Gustave. Bouvard et Pécuchet. Chicago, Simon P. Magee Publisher, 1904.
